I'm pleased with amount of wallspace Wellington City Gallery has given to photography lately (a medium that it has always taken seriously) so I'm grateful to see Fiona Pardington's exhibition 'A Beautiful Hesitation' here. Yvonne Todd's 'Creamy Psychology' show was a highlight, and Jono Rotman's recent portrait exhibition and the Photo Forum survey show were also most welcome. But I do think Peter Ireland's review raises many concerns, which is why I posted this link to his review here (not something I'm in the habit of using this page for - it's more for promotion of Photospace Gallery and its artists). Link below.
It would be great to see a fresh, curated show concerned with the medium and practise of photograhy in NZ as a whole, as we haven't seen such a thing since Imposing Narratives (1989, Wellington City Gallery, which included Fiona Pardington's work). The best such survey exhibition of recent times was 'Pictures they want to make' curated by Edward Hanfling and Chris Corson-Scott, but this show didn't make it to Wellington, sadly. (It's not too late!) The exhibition was shown at Northart, Auckland, in May-June 2013, (titled 'Recent Auckland Photography', which may have limited its uptake by other galleries, sadly). The exhibition highlighted a sea change in photographic art practise and deserves national viewing.
