London Urban - Photographs 1996 - 2004
DJN London Urban is a series of photographs taken at accident scenes after the event. The evidence left is the remodelled street furniture, unconsciously shaped by the vehicle/driver. I began living in London in 1991. Soon after arriving I noticed the vast amount of street furniture, much of it damaged and not repaired for weeks or months. (The Borough of Southwark was severely cash-strapped.) One can imagine what happened to cause the damage shown in the photographs but this is not my primary interest. The resulting traces have a very sculptural quality which I could not imagine or make, but lend themselves very well to being photographed. The images also reference economics/politics, history, urban plight and transport issues/bad driving… 'London Urban' is DJN's first exhibition at Photospace Gallery. We also plan to show his painting and other artwork under the Gilberd Marriott Gallery banner in 2017-18.
