The NZ Listener magazine is running their Photo essay Competition again this year. It is restricted to NZ images this time (good). Last year, the winning entry was photographed abroad.
The prizes are well worth it, as is seeing your winning entry in print and on their website. Last year they put 10 photo essays on their site, so that was great exposure for ten people. Although there were some good images last year, the stories mostly weren't strongly edited. I have to be honest and say I thought the standard of last year's entries was lame! If you have already done Photocourse 1 at Photospace, I know you have a good chance of getting placed in this competition. The photo story tips in the Listener article linked below are good ones. If you can ingest and express them all, you will win! Or if not, at least you'll be a better photographer through making an effort. Another tip (from me): if you're stuck for something to photograph, pick up your local paper. In central Wellington, for example, Capital Times and the Wellingtonian are brimming with stories that provide leads to worthwhile photo essay subjects. Community vege garden, anyone? Or local beer brewing? http://www.listener.co.nz/competitions/listener-photo-essay-competition/

Welcome to the Photospace Gallery blog. I will be using this space to talk about photographs (specific ones), exhibitions, and photography in general. It will also contain updates on Photospace exhibitions and exhibitors, and other random stuff happening at the gallery and perhaps elsewhere. Let's see where it goes.
One plannned feature is the Friday Photo, which will be chosen from the gallery stock or current exhibition. The plan is for this be added every Friday morning, at least after the coffee machine has heated up and produced at least two ripping flat whites. This Weebly website is not as yet active, but it will soon replace the old website, which has been hosted on 2Day.com since early 1999. 2day has been a good, reliable host, and I will leave a skeleton version of the site up on there, but will take most of the photos off it as the charges for space are really quite high. It has to be said that 2012 was a difficult year for Photospace, Gilberd Marriott Gallery, and from what I gather, most other privately-owned galleries in Wellington and also around the country. This short post by Rob Garrett on The Big Idea makes the point and suggests some ways forward. Indeed, it has more recently been more of a challenge to attract people to the exhibitions and to sell photographs. in 2013, Photospace Gallery will be trying some new things in order to engage with a wider sector of the population who are interested in the visual arts, photography in particular, but for whom visiting a small, privately-owned gallery is not necessarily a regular activity. Watch this space for frequent updates, thoughts on photography, and occasional rants. And all the best for 2013. Bring it on. |
