It has become a Photospace Gallery tradition to have an Andrew Ross exhibition near the end of the year, but we didn't have a major, themed exhibition planned for this year (as we do for the end of 2017), just a small selection of photos in Gallery Room 4 (the office). However, a clear-out of unnecessary items from the stockroom (the room behind the office) presented enough naturally-lit space to expand this to 20 framed prints. The works were picked out of Andrew's box of photos from the last year or so, and we've included one print from 2013. All of the photographs are contact prints made from the hand-developed, large format 8" x 10" sheet film negatives, so the prints are the exact scale of the negatives. This is a very pure way of printing, analagous to direct-cutting to vinyl in sound recording; or, more accurately, they are but one generation removed from the original light impression fixed in silver-gelatine film emulsion, and with no intervening lens to colour the result. The prints are individually toned using separate gold and selenium toning solutions. We'll be taking a bit of a break over Christmas and New Year, but the gallery will be open by appointment. I'm not planning lo leave Wellington so appointments can be made to view the photographs if desired. The gallery is closed from 23rd Dec. to 8th Jan., inclusive. Andrew Ross - artist info
