Bliss: a collection of montages
Photospace Gallery, 27th June - 19th July 2014 The work began as a series based on hand gestures that could be read by all cultures. This series of five works (#6 to #10 in the exhibition) incorporates images hand cut and montaged from old books and uses imagery mainly from my interests in art, photography, cinema, fashion and Modernist architecture. In the second series (#1 to #5 in the exhibition) I found two books on birds and butterflies printed in the late 1950’s. They reminded me of my childhood in suburbia where everyone seemed to have budgies and some neighbours had wooden butterflies stuck to their houses. These two motifs are incorporated into architectural interior and exterior backgrounds with other random elements to make resolved compositions. Series three ( #11 - #13 in the exhibition) uses images from an old 1930s book on London combined with more contemporary photographs of London. The paintings used are by British artists and the text is from an old book on aesthetics in art. Christine Szabados - artist bio
