Artist's statement
When I was at primary school I won a $10 book
token. I bought a book called The Shell, which I still own. It has perfectly focused, glossy, full-page
colour photographs barely interrupted by discreet plate numbers. If you flick
to the back and locate the plate number, you’ll find outline diagrams and
texts. I quickly learned that the photograph was the illustration, while the
drawings and texts were the source of real information. The drawn outline
renders the represented object as an archetype, an "icon" to the
photograph's "index", while the text tells you what you are looking
at. In Objects andReasons I
have conflated the two modes of reproduction and representation, but have found
the attempt to increase clarity through the reduction of information is fated
(like most best-of-both-worlds scenarios).
