Fire
This series started from visiting this house (which was across the road) for work and being amazed by the views and textures left after the flames. An overall feeling of sadness had to be overcome and two visits were needed to get the images. The house is now rebuilt and looking great. |
Manufactured Spaces
Living in the country, I find cities great for wandering around seeing them with fresh eyes. This series started from one empty shop and great light falling into it. Now, in every town I visit, I look for these empty spaces. But they are not empty; every one has a trace of its previous occupants. They have all left their mark, making these spaces unique and leaving a lot of unanswered questions. |
Secret Garden
Dog Island Lighthouse was built on a very small island 3km from Bluff. It was manned from 1865 to 1989. The keepers had to be almost self sufficient and had a large garden area with hedgerows for protection from the southern winds. After the lighthouse was automated everything was left to the elements. The hedgerow grew to trees but were shaped by the prevailing winds. The garden disappeared. These images show the determination of a past way of life. |
Wilderness landscapes have always been my main photographic subject and continue to be so, but a shift in my photographic work eighteen months ago has seen me producing small photographic monographs. This is partly from the desire to have a printed object to hold and partly to open my eyes in different directions. Nine projects have been finished so far. Some projects start as a single image and grow, and others begin from an idea or inspiration.
The Photospace Gallery exhibition Three Short Stories presents three of these projects. |
