the path to the top of the hill
A few hundred metres from my front door a narrow path leads up the hill. Winding through karaka and kohekohe trees, it brings you to the top of windswept cliffs above the sea. From here the rugged coast sweeps north towards Kapiti Island and into the salt-hazy distance. To the west, on a fine day, you can see the South Island rising just above the horizon. I used to walk this hill around once a week. Since the lockdown due to the Covid-19 global pandemic I have walked this path every day as a time to reflect on the swift and awful change in a wider world that already seemed in constant and violent transformation. - Camus Wyatt, April 2020 |
