Lucien Rizos GDBY PK P 2013 Fringes and backgrounds Photospace Gallery 11th-28th April 2014
This exhibition of original cutouts of reproductions from “Tourist” books is having its second showing on the walls of Photospace Gallery. The first time, in 2002, the show was called Fringes and Backgrounds. This time the context is the screening of Lucien Rizos’s remake of Geoff Murphy’s feature film Goodbye Pork Pie, GDBY PK P, on Saturday 12th April at the New Zealand Film Archive on Taranaki Street, and now at Photospace Gallery.
GDBY PK P is putting the idea of Fringes and Backgrounds 2002 through its paces in the medium of cinema and video. Every frame of the Geoff Murphy film has been cropped, eliminating the main cast and the yellow Mini, while retaining the original sound track, all in the real time of the original movie. As in Fringes and Backgrounds 2002, in GDBY PK P, Lucien Rizos trains his visual eye on details embedded in the background; a mother walks a child to school; a policeman’s shirt; the leather texture of a background piece of set. The movie GDBY PK P 2013 is screening as a video at Photospace Gallery, along with the re-showing of 'Fringes and backgrounds' until 28th April, at least (the film may continue beyond that date).
